An Overview of Edu-SLUG

A package will be put together for South African schools in particular that includes educational software for all learning areas that teaches essential Information Technology skills. This package will include teaching content and instruction, workbooks for learners, textbooks and most importantly, software. This will result in an easy and fun to teach subject with little or no preparation time needed by the teacher

The primary focus of the project will be to provide software that teaches Grade 1 to 12 learners invaluable Information Technology and Logical Thinking skills and to provide a foundation of knowledge that will allow learners to take Computer Studies/Information Technology as a subject in Grade 10. A secondary focus will be to cover content from other learning areas and enhance learning in those areas by providing multimedia content and alternative forms of assessment. Open source software will be developed to keep costs for schools down and to tailor the package that is being put together to suit the needs of the South African education system.

The Project will utilise a client/server model. A distribution of Linux for the purposes of this Project will be created/modified. A database containing the details of each learner will be kept on the server. This will provide a tracking system that will allow the learner to be assessed/monitored throughout their time at school. The educational software will send scores/achievements to the database. This will also provide an assessment tool for other learning areas, provided the applications being use cover the required outcomes for those learning areas. For application training, a certain set of applications with certain functionality will be served to the learner according to the grade they are currently in when they log on to the system. For example, a learner in grade one will have access to a word processor with basic functionality, such as changing fonts and font sizes and a learner in grade seven will have advanced features of the word processor available to them.

We would like to see South Africa become a leader in the field of information and communications technology. We would like to see new ideas coming out of the people of South Africa, and we believe that by creating this package, we would be providing a foundation for these ideas to grow from. This project will benefit South Africa and the people of South Africa immensely. We need to set a solid foundation for the children of this country to build skills on later on in their lives. If South Africa is to become a world leader in the field of Information and Communications Technology, we need to do the groundwork now. We would like to make sure that every child in every school in South Africa gets an opportunity to learn to use the technology that is so prevalent in modern society.
